Marion Center Speedway’s 45’Th Season May 29, 2010

Marion Center Speedway continued its 45’Th season of racing Saturday night with it’s annual Memorial Day Special with double points for the five divisions racing on the quarter-mile clay oval located between Indiana and Punxsutawney.

The first division to take the track was the Mike’s Auto & Towing Strictly Stocks.  Nate Smith from Glen Campbell was scheduled to start on the pole but did not make it for the feature.  Steve Matko was on the outside pole and at the start took the early lead of the race.  Then Brett Bingaman of Cherry Tree passed Matko for the lead on lap five and continued up in front for the remaining 10 laps to take home the victory.  Matko, also from Cherry Tree, finished second and to complete the 1, 2, 3 Cherry Tree sweep was Bryant Small.  Then came Greg Buterbaugh from Clymer and Justin Queen from Irvona.  Rounding out the top ten were Tim Laughard, Gary Furman, Jr., Matthew Eiselman, Kylie Hamilton and Travis Brady.  Winning the Mike’s Auto & Towing Strictly Stock heat races were Brett Bingaman and Denny Smith.

The W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stocks took the track next with Jeff Taylor from Corsica leading them onto the track.  But Taylor’s lead faded after the first lap and Jim Boyer from Indiana took the lead away from Taylor.  Taylor continued to run in second place all the way to the checkered flag behind feature winner Jim Boyer.  Third place went to Eric Baun from Rossiter and he was followed by Tim Bish from Ringgold and Randy Reitz of Punxsutawney.  Sixth through tenth places went to Tim White, Ray Hickok, Jr., Rich Waltman, Eric Lingenfelter, and Rob Wilkins.  The W.G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stocks heat races were won by Jim Boyer and Eric Baun.

Sammy Stile from Charleroi added to the excitement of the Lias Tire Latemodel feature by making a near end of race pass on leader Clate Copeman of Greensburg to take the lead and the win.  The two had battled each other for the lead after Stile who started on the pole lost the lead to Copeman after the first lap.  Then after crossing the line for lap 17, Stile passed Copeman to regain the lead and went on to take the checkers for the win.  Copeman finished second and Wally Fox from Cooperstown was third.  Fourth place went to Rick Davis from Home and fifth was taken by Rod Phillips from Punxsutawney.  Sixth through tenth places went to Ken Schaltenbrand, Dane Laraway, David Blazavich, Dwayne Taneyhill, and Will Cochran.  The rest of the field of the Lias Tire Latemodels finished as follows:  Jerry Redden, Jeff Compton, Gene Kain, Jim Kurpakus, John Poling, and Mike Sgro.  The Lias Tire Latemodel heat races went to Clate Copeman and Rod Phillips.

Today’s Hot Country, Q-102 Front Wheel Drive 4 Cylinder Rice Burners were next on the program.  Craig Decker from Cherry Tree started on the pole and led most of the race but a caution with two laps remaining stopped his progress to the checkered flag.  Decker was pursued throughout the race by Chris Hickok from Commodore who started second and was determined to get around Decker.  He finally got his chance when a caution stopped the race and Hickok got the jump on Decker on the restart.  Hickok held off Decker for the final two laps for the win.  Decker took second, third went to Larry Depp, Jr. from Punxsutawney, Shawn Hadden also from Punxsy was fourth and David Buterbaugh from Cherry Tree was fifth.  Rounding out the top ten in order were Jesse Short, Denny Phillips, Shane Bronson, Michael Phillipson and Jon Lee.  The Q-102, 4 Cylinder heats were won by Shawn Hadden and Larry Depp, Jr..

Andrew Satterlee from Rochester Mills dethroned Rod Phillips as the uncontested king of the Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Limited Latemodels.  Phillips who has dominated the division since way back in early 2009 finally lost a feature race to Satterlee Saturday night at Marion Center Speedway.  Satterlee started on the pole with Phillips on the outside pole after both competitors had won their respective heat races.  At the drop of the first green, Satterlee took off with Phillips on his tail.  Phillips chased Satterlee lap after lap, and tried high and low moves in the turns to make a pass but Satterlee blocked all attempts by Phillips and maneuvered his machine across the finish line first for the win.  Phillips finished close behind in second and Scott Alvetro from Reynoldsville took third.  Fourth place was filled by Cheyenne Reed from Punxsutawney and Jeff Weakland from Hastings was fifth.  Sixth through tenth places went to Chad Helman, Bobby Watt, Joey Valenti, Scott Stein, and Sam Gindlesperger.  The Hoosier Tire Limited Latemodel heats were won by Satterlee and Phillips.

Marion Center Speedway would like to thank some of its sponsors this season including Lias Tire –Latemodels, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Limited Latemodels, Q-102 Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder Rice Burners, W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stocks and the newly sponsored Strictly Stocks by Mike’s Auto and Towing from Clymer.  Also thanks to Butler Auto Supply of Indiana and the Indiana McDonalds and Route 22 Resort Plaza McDonalds restaurants in Blairsville for their support.  Continuing this season is the cooperative effort between Dog Hollow Speedway and Marion Center Speedway to run the new Coal Country Championship Late Model Series so Latemodel drivers can once again go for some big cash money by winning races at both tracks.  More details will be coming about the latemodel series.  We hope to see you next Saturday night at Marion Center Speedway!
