May 1, 2010 was opening night for Marion Center Speedway’s 45’Th season of racing at the quarter-mile track between Indiana and Punxsutawney. The weather held out and all five divisions were able to finish their races for the night.
The first division to take the track was the Strictly Stocks that are sponsored this season by Mike’s Auto and Towing from Clymer. The feature started out slow with the usual bumps and slides as new drivers got used to the track and old drivers got used to new cars or set-ups. After just completing lap 6 of the 15 lap feature, cars started to slide in turn three. A nose got under the side of the 72 W car driven by Robin Welsh of Stump Creek and started the car rolling onto it’s side and roof. Welsh was reported to have been knocked out momentarily, but came around quickly and no further injuries were reported. After that incident on the track, Brett Bingaman of Cherry Tree took the lead of the race from Nate Smith of Glen Campbell. Bingaman went on for the win with other developments behind him, which left Greg Buterbaugh from Clymer in second place and Steve Matko from Cherry Tree in third. Fourth place went to Kylie Hamilton from Rosebud and Ryan Weakland from Hastings was fifth. Rounding out the top ten in order were Eric McKendree, Matt Eiselman, Nate Smith, Tim Laughard and Robin Welsh. Winning the Mike’s Auto and Towing Strictly Stock heat races were Brett Bingaman and Nate Smith.
The Lias Tire Latemodels were on the track next. Dane Laraway brought the field onto the track and led the first lap but was then overtaken by Jerry Redden from Mahaffey. Redden took the pack to nearly the halfway point but was passed by Gregg Satterlee from Rochester Mills for the lead. Satterlee had started ninth in the sixteen-car field and was meticulously working his way to the front so he could cut loose and run his car wide open. Once in the lead, Satterlee did just that and put some serious real estate between himself and second place finisher Sammy Stile from Charleroi. Next came Rick Davis from Home, then Rod Phillips of Punxsutawney and Matt Gaston from Rochester Mills. Also in the top ten were Redden, Clate Copeman, Chris Clark, Wally Fox and Billy Eash. The winners of the Lias Tire Latemodel heat races were Gregg Satterlee and Matt Gaston.
Next up were the W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stocks. Their feature was also marred by an incident that left Scott Bowman from Murrysville flipped over on the track before the first lap could be recorded in the books. At the drop of the green flag the cars took off and going into turn two, the 19 machine went rolling. Bowman was uninjured but out of the race. The feature continued without any more problems. Eric Baun from Rossiter started fourth and was the only leader of the race. He was followed by Chris Schneider of Springdale for second place and third went to Tim White from Punxsutawney. Corey Neal from Trade City was fourth and Jim Fosnaught of Bairdford took fifth. Sixth through tenth places went to Jim Boyer, Eric Lingenfelter, Jackie Phillips, Ray Hickok, Jr. and Rich Waltman. Tim White and Chris Schneider won the W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stock heat races.
Rod Phillips from Punxsutawney started his Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Limited Latemodel 2010 season with a complete domination of the track for his feature. Starting on the pole, Phillips was the only driver to lead the twenty-lap feature; looking very much like last year’s runaway victories. Phillips was pursued by Scott Stein from Cherry Tree but Stein had to settle for second place at the checkers just ahead of Scott Alvetro from Reynoldsville. Andrew Satterlee from Rochester Mills was next in fourth place and Dave Buchanan of Cherry Tree took fifth. The top ten included Joey Valenti, Tom Jobe, John Oaks, Tom Shaffer and Tyler Deitz. Scott Stein and Jeff Weakland won the Hoosier Tire mid-Atlantic Limited Latemodel heats.
Today’s Hot Country, Q-102 Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder Rice Burners came out for the final feature of the night with Chris Hickok bringing them onto the track from his pole position start. The lead was quickly turned over to Larry Depp, Jr. from Punxsutawney and Depp led every lap but one during the rest of the race. Craig Decker from Cherry Tree stayed on Depp’s tail and took the lead away from Depp at the halfway mark. But Depp recovered the lead the next lap and managed to keep the persistent Decker behind him the rest of the feature. Decker took second place and Joe Petyak from Gallitzin who was always in the front of the pack with Depp and Decker took third. Fourth place went to David Buterbaugh from Cherry Tree and Bob Pease from Blairsville took fifth. Brent Sholtis was next and followed by Joe Huffman, Jr., Brian Paulson, Chris Hickok and Denny Phillips. The Q-102 front Wheel Drive 4 Cylinder heats were won by Chris Hickok and Larry Depp, Jr..
Coming up next Saturday will be the Mother’s Day Special at the track, so be sure to bring Mom early to the track for a special surprise from Marion Center Speedway.
Marion Center Speedway would like to thank some of its sponsors this season including Lias Tire –Latemodels, Hoosier Tire Mid-Atlantic Limited Latemodels, Q-102 Front Wheel Drive Four Cylinder Rice Burners, W. G. Satterlee & Sons Street Stocks and the newly sponsored Strictly Stocks by Mike’s Auto and Towing from Clymer. Also thanks to Butler Auto Supply of Indiana and the Indiana and Resort Plaza McDonalds in Blairsville for their support. Continuing this season is the cooperative effort between Dog Hollow Speedway and Marion Center Speedway to run the new Coal Country Championship Late Model Series so Latemodel drivers can once again go for some big cash money by winning races at both tracks. More details will be coming about the latemodel series.
